Time to leave or sweat it out?

I recently started a new part time job with a small company. I have noted every time I go in to pick up my payroll it's never ready, I often have to wait, or pick it up at another time.

Today was payday. I called to see if our checks were ready in the am. They were not. I called at the end of the day and they were not ready. I called my manager and asked her if the company is having financial issues, that I rely on my pay and count on it the day it's due.

I got a call hours later, telling me they had issues with payroll. I don't beleive it.

I am fearful that I may not get a check the next go around. Should I resign?

I would look for a new job, but if you like the job you have now, have a "heart to heart" with the owner or operator of the business. Ask them if they are satisfied with your job, then explain to them in a nice way, that you need to be paid on the day that they say is pay day. We all have bills, and small business does too. Payroll should be number one with them. Also, if they make it a habit to pay late, explain that's unacceptable. (They don't have to have a certain time of day to pay you. They do have to pay you on the day they have established as "pay day".) Get as much information about this business as you can. Get the FEID# (federal employer id number). You may need this if they just skip out and not pay you at all. That's illegal, but the Department of Labor can help you more with that.

It I were in the situation, I would probably stay in the job, assuming everything else with the job is tolerable, but I would look for somewhere else for a part-time job.

I would not work no more than a few days after not getting paid, and explain that if they want your services, pay you, on time.

With smaller businesses this happens a lot. Most of the time the business has to hire a company to do checks, and they might not be as worried about your check as you are. I understand your situation, and i would discuss, with your boss, that if things don't pick up, you will have no choice but to leave. Legally, you have the right to your check, and they should be ready when she said they would be.
