Time off work to volunteer abroad?

Ok, so was wondering if anyone can help me, im 19 and looking to apply to the platform 2 program where they send u abroad and do volunteer work. im applying to go in october until december as this is the last trip as from 2011 it wont be running anymore, but the problem is i work in a shop and ur not allowed holidays from mid november because of christmas, any ideas how i can ask for the time off, obviously im willing to have it unpaid leave but what if they say no?! how can i convince them to say yes, as i wanna keep my job.
