There's just no jobs where i live?

I'm in a lovely catch-22. just graduated from college, excellent grades, academic honors, you name it. got no money (since i spent all my time studying i wasn't exactly earning a 6 figure salary in school). i have college loans to pay in a few months, and no money to pay them.

all the jobs with my skill sets are in cities like dc and nyc. i don't live anywhere near there. however i can't afford to relocate. so i'm stuck living with my parents waiting to find a job in a really rural area where the only new jobs are healthcare and mechanics (i've been looking through classifieds for weeks, i'm not really exaggerating).

anyone else in this sort of catch-22?

You only have two options.

The first option, is to suck it up, and get a job in a field that you do not have a degree in. This will allow you to stay with your parents, and put money away. In a year or two, you can start looking at the larger cities, and apply when you have the means to support yourself.

The other option is to ask your parents for help. They might be able to put you up in some crappy apartment, on the outskirts of town. This allows you to get into the field that you desire, and work your way up.

As for the loans, most student loans can be deferred until you have the means to repay them. Check with your lender to see if this applies to you.

I don't know if your area needs this kind of help but try your post office, since it is a rural area they might be looking for casuals to help out. You don't need any skills and make 12 dollars an hour (going rate in austin, but it is suppose to be the same everywhere) While the post office is not a good career for life, I know seeing how I have been with them for 11yrs, it will allow you to save up some money so you can move to DC. Im not sure what kind of degree you have, but if it is a specialty some jobs will pay to relocate you to their city. But once again depends on your degree. There is day care, they usually don't advertise but can always use help...minimum wage though. you can do odd jobs for people, paper route, stocker, car wash. These may or may not work. do not scan through the classifieds. Go out there hit every business and apply. Save up money and go somewhere that you can use your degree and live a more financially secure life. good luck

So sorry, but I have to ask - didn't you know about the location of job opportunities before you graduated? This should not be coming as a surprise to you at this point. Many students work while attending college in order to gain 'real world' experience and save money so they can hit the ground running when they graduate. If you want a job in your field of study, and you didn't prepare sufficiently, you have to do so know. Call your loan company and take a deferment. then take any job you can (and don't forget to check out the resources of the Career Placement office in the college where you studied) and put as much money aside as you can until you have enough to relocate, and start making applications to the jobs you really want, wherever they may be.
