Suspended for a short register but I know I didn't do it...?
I know this is kind of long, but I'm desperate.
I've been written up twice within six days of working at a fast food restaurant. The first time, a customer claimed to have given me $20 when I was pretty sure she had given $5. I was new, and the co-worker next to me who I figured had much more experience than I did, told me to just give the rest of the change back (as if she had given me the $20).
The second time, I worked for some hours, then I was told to go on break for thirty minutes, and then I came back for one more half hour of work before leaving. I called in two days later to ask for my schedule, and they tell me all my shifts for the week. Two days after that, I come to work and find out I've been suspended for my register falling short nearly $20.
No one had told me this, and I had no reason to believe I had done anything wrong, and I find it odd that they still went ahead and scheduled me and then waited until I showed up to work to be told I was suspended. I'm sure a total of four days was enough to see the register was short.
So I was told I could talk to the store manager, but my question is, is there a point? Will it do anything for me?
If it helps, I'd like to mention they have not mentioned anything about how to deal with the cash register in terms of do I need to lock it when I'm on break, how to even lock the thing, and on top of that, it's never logged onto my name, and they've never shown me how, nor have they acted like that was an issue. I always asked "What register would you like me to work with?" And they'll point to one and say that one's fine, even though it's not under my name.
I've never questioned anything of the policies on this because I don't know to question it. I've barely worked at all, and this is killing me to see I'm already suspended.
How do I go about this? Please help! Thank you!

I know your going through a tough time right now. You're new to the position. Your honesty has been questioned and you are on a non paid suspension. And to top things off, you don't seem to have any recourse. Well believe it or not, in the greater scheme of things, whats happened to you is pretty standard business practice in the fast food industry. About all you can do for the time being is learn from the incident by instituting some quality control on your own. For instance, when someone hands you a bill, always place it on top of the register until you have made change. Count the change out verbally so the customer hears you. |
