Six month employment contract?
I have a job interview tomorrow with a company who has asked me to sign a 6-month employment contract. The human resources rep I spoke to said the contract means that if I leave the job before I've worked there for six months the company will require me to pay back EVERYTHING they have paid me (so, for a full time job, more than $10 000!) I asked her to clarify three times, that is definitely what the company is asking from me.
I have no intentions of signing anything like that, but does anyone know if it is even legal for a company to require you to sign a contract like that in order to be hired?

I have never heard of a contract like that. How does that jive with federal law? The wage and hour folks would love to hear about the contract. Can you ask for a copy to read before you go into the lions den? |

I honestly don't think that's legal. i signed a contract at my last job that required me to pay them back for any training i received if i resigned within 2 years of my hire date...which sucks but is fair. it was pro-rated also, so the longer i worked then the less i had to pay back. i don't think that the company can legally ask you to pay back money that you worked for...training and such yes they can, but not for actual money that you worked hours for. i wouldn't sign that unless you have no other option and i would consult an attorney too. |
