Silly question: how does overtime work...work?

I was wondering how it works. Let's say you are a store assistant (I don't work at the moment but I'm looking to go into retail), and you're scheduled to from 9-4pm or something like that.

How does overtime work then? Your boss approaches you and asks you to stay longer, or you stay longer seeing as your "job" isn't done yet. I'm clueless about these things, as you see (live in the UK). Speaking of...if you are in retail, like a shop assistant...do you just leave when your hours for the day are over...do you report to your supervisor....etcetera...

Last, but not least...I want to fit another question in, because I did a bunch of interviews a few weeks ago, and one person told me I won't be getting paid for the first month of work...they described it as a deposit. That to me makes absolutely no sense, but I will do it, if I can't find any other work. I'm gonna talk to someone who knows better about these things, but if you have some advice for me, please share!

Thanks

Okay.....Overtime - if you are employed your hours will be stated in your contract of employment (which you should get after 12 weeks) for example 9am - 5pm with one hour for lunch (which does not have to be paid for but legally you have to take...check out the ACAS website(UK based). If your immediate boss asks you to work over say until 6pm then that would be considered 1hrs overtime - can get confusing if you work w/ends banks hols, sundays etc so check out ACAS.

Next bit...wait a month for your salary- employers can (if you are employed on monthly basis) not pay you until you have worked a month, so you work 'a month in hand', however if you need money for transport to get to work then ask if it would be possible to have a small advance to cover your transport costs, or check out the job centre see if they can help for the first month.

My advice would be to do some 'homework' about work through sites like ACAS and just follow the leads.

Overtime is an optional amount of time that you work, at your employers request, for which you should be paid an enhanced rate.

Some firms require you to work a week or a month in hand. This is then paid to you when you leave.

Any other none payment system should be avoided as the employer is just taking advantage.

Any fool can work for nothing. Either he has a paid job for you or he needs a volunteer. He can't have both.

Also you should get a contract of employment with all your details, rate of pay, hours of work, holiday entitlement and sickness policy. Employers must issue these within 8 weeks of starting, by law.
