Should I work for a temp agency?

Category: Other

In the fall I will be working as an independent contractor, about once or twice a week. The job will last from September until May. The pay isn't all that much, so I need to find another job that will be able to accommodate a flexible schedule. Right now I am employed full time and my boss said he would work around my schedule but I will have to give up my full time status, thus losing my health benefits and I will take a pay cut that will knock me down to just above min. wage.

I was thinking of going to a temp agency to see if they could provide enough work since the temp agencies in my area include benefits. I'm not sure I would be able to get enough consistent work however. I would need to work at least 30 hours a week when I'm working my other job and then 40 hours a week when I'm not working there.

I'm interested in any advice from anyone who has gone through a similar situation.

Unfortunately I really don't think that will work out to your benefit. If you accept a part time job working for one place through the agency they'll most likely give you 20 hrs per week & then you'll be trying to figure out what to do for a 3rd position to get the other 10 hrs. If you want to just be on call for temp assignments, they usually give those to their best people who have been with the agency a long time. Honestly so many people need work right now that the last few temp agencies I called (before finding my current job) wouldn't even see me because they had too many people & not enough work and I have TONS of experience so it wasn't that. They wouldn't even look at a resume or have me come in for an interview. Maybe you should consider switching gears completely during that time & do cocktail serving or waitressing or something where you could at least make good money in tips. Not that it's the best job ever but when I had a weird schedule before I worked at a sports bar serving beer & wine & made a killing in tips. Best of luck with everything :-)
