Should I try to negotiate my salary?

Category: Other

inthepouringraininthepouringrain

I work for a clothing retail chain as an assistant manager. Recently, a store management position opened up and I was passed over for the promotion. The person who was offered the store turned it down because he is leaving the company, and he even turned down a second offer involving a higher salary. If I am offered the position next, I am unsure about my options for negotiating salary. I know what the other person was offered, and I'll be sincerely insulted if I'm offered less. What should I do if I'm approached with a much lower offer? I really want the position but I feel like I've demonstrated the same quality of work as the person who was offered the position first. I don't want to be petty and let on that I know inappropriate information.

In this economy. Be lucky you have a job and don't complain.

First of all - clear your mind. You're not thinking straight. "I'll be sincerely insulted if I'm offered less" Considering you were passed up the first time, why wouldn't you expect to be offered less?

At the very least, if you are asked, just inquire about salary negotiations. It never hurts to try. But stay realistic here. Don't get crazy and feel like you should be given the same treatment as the person they wanted first.

If you let on that you have inappropriate info, you will not only be not offered the position, you could be terminated.

First- try to find out why you were passed over. There is a reason another person was offered the position- you just don't know what it is.

If you are offered the position, most likely, it will be at the lower offer. It sounds like the other person countered with another job offer and they met the pay, but that person still took the other job. You were not their first choice. It's just the way it is.

Well let me say that as a person that as an assistant manager, its not always about the quality of work. two people can work with the same amount of effort but the person with the better attitude and experience is going to be promoted first. and i'm assuming that the promotion would be to the store manager, which is an extreme amount of responsibility. if you were passed up the first time, evaluate yourself compared to him. he obviously has something that you are lacking. unless you find that and instill whatever he has that you don't into yourself, i would expect to be offered a less amount. as for what to do with the offer you are offered, i would take it, it would obviously more than what you get paid now. you don't seem to have a lot to negotiate with. if you really want the position and are offered it, take it. you can always get raises down the line if you prove yourself.

First, I would find out why you were passed over for the position. Maybe the other person was truly more skilled and educated which makes them more qualified for the position and higher salary. If however, you possess the same skills and education I would wait to see if they offer you the position, then see what salary they offer. You could be worrying for nothing.

Privileged information is a sticky subject and very hard to approach when you have information that you shouldn't. If they do not offer you the same money, you could ask them, Is this is the same offer the other person received? At that point though there is no guarantee that they are going to be truthful, so I wouldn't challenge them on the answer unless you are ready to admit that you know something you shouldn't. I believe at that point the only other thing you could do would be to accept the position, prove your worth and then ask for more money.

Good luck.
