Should I tell my manager I am joining military soon?

It's a descent job, I like doing it, but I know that my purpose in life is in the military. My basic training is set for September 7th. The problem is I live alone and I need to pay rent until then but my work hours are on call, whenever they need my help they call me, and recently I have barely been getting any work so I wont even have enough money to pay rent by June at this rate.
The only thing I can do is get on EI for the next few months and concentrate on preparing my fitness for the military. But if I quit on my own behalf I wouldn't be eligible for ei.
Should I tell my boss about this and ask him to officially lay me off due to lack of business so that I will be eligible for ei? Or what should I do?
