Should I request time off of my new job?

I started working at a grocery store about a month ago, and my mother is planning a trip to the next province over, next weekend. I wish she had given me more notice but I only found out last week. The dilemma is that I`m working Saturday and Sunday..The two days we`re going to be away. Should I ask if there`s any way I can get those days off? I don`t want to feel like a slackass at my new job.

That said, I`d also really like to go on the trip, seeing as my family is poor and we never travel ANYWHERE. ugh.

So ask for the days off. Worse happens is they say no.

Just stick to working at your grocery store as you need the money more and you'll have other opportunities to travel. Your employer should be given at least two weeks notice to figure out who would be covering for you. Actually....you could read in your workers manual what you can do as far as notices of absence and stuff.

That is a tricky question you are asking. You're new, so it will be frowned upon depending on the culture of the store you work at. If you decide to go on the trip you will need to switch hours with someone else in the store. Ask you supervisor if it is ok if you switch with someone. You can either trade hours with them and take an equal number of their hours for their taking yours or you can give them those days and let your supervisor know that they are willing to work in your place. Just make sure that your decision is communicated with your supervisors so that you are not held responsible if that person does not show up.
