Should I put my most recent job on my resume if it does pertain directly to the job I am apply for?

I left my regular job in March in telecomm because I had an abusive boss. I have been working part-time as a teacher since May. Is it appropriate to put my teaching job on my resume even though it's not related to telecomm. I thought I should because it would show that I have been working. I am worried if I don't put it down they will try to call my last telecomm job first for a background check. I had no problems there but it was no secret that I left because my boss was so insane. I am just worried that the employer might say something to mess it up for me. It was a really dysfunctional company. I know they may still contact them anyway...I am just nervous about it because I really want this job.

I would put your most recent job on your resume as it shows that you are employed. It is always better to be employed than not. They will probably contact your old employer anyway. Gees, I worked for a major telecom company in Silicon Valley and worked under an insane first line manager who tried to get me fired. Someone from personell got in touch with me because she couldn't understand what was going on since I was receiving commendations from user groups (my internal customers) commenting on my outstanding work. Also, if you could get some letters of recommendation from internal customers within companies where you worked that would counteract any negative things that your ex-boss might try to say. I truly empathize with your situation as I had the meanest boss ever.

Yes, you should put down the teaching position because it is part of your employment history. As to your last job, depending on where you are in the world, there may be laws that prohibit bad references (although there are always around that if the prospective and previous employers are so minded).

I hope this helps

Yes, list the job on your resume. It doesn't matter that it was a different line of work, just explain that you wanted to try something new and found out that you really miss your true calling - telecomm. The key is to put a positive spin on the reason you left your previous job. No hiring manager wants to hear that your boss was insane. Everyone says the boss is a jerk. As a boss you get tired of hearing it. When I go to hire someone, I look for a positive attitude, talking bad about previous employers or bosses is no good.
