Should I let potential employers contact one of my previous bosses?

I apologize in advance for the lengthiness of the question. :)

My last job ended on a good note (thankfully), but the one before that was sour from the get-go. The manager would alter the schedule at the last minute without notifying people who were affected, so that the very next day, they would be scheduled for a shift and not know it. I should also say that I checked my schedule after EVERY shift, and every Friday when they were put out, and still taken by surprise. I was promised 15-25 hours a week upon being hired, but only got 3-15, in sporadic little bursts. In fact, the last month I worked there, I was only assigned two days of work. Out of an entire month.

Yeah.

And the other part is, I made it perfectly clear that I had an 'open schedule', if my hours were set out in advance. My manager was under the mistaken impression that this meant 'on-call', and got irritated with me when I could not come in with less than three hours lead time before a shift.

The last straw was when, thanks to no hours at this place, I got another job through my cousin which was 25-40 hours a week. I gave this one priority over the first, since the working environment was much more favorable and they didn't play the schedule-shuffling game every week. As a result of that happening at Job #1, I got scheduled for hours at both jobs on the same day at the same time without being notified, and told the first boss I couldn't make it (at least seven hours before the shift began, mind), and he basically said 'Show up or you're fired.' He made the Assistant manager do it. So my response was 'Okay. I quit.'. And that was that. Haven't heard from them since.

Since this isn't exactly a favorable term to leave a job on, should I just ask potential employers not to contact them? And if they ask why not in the interview, should I tell them a summarized version of this?
