Should I leave my current job for this new job offer?

Category: Other

Just MeJust Me

I currently work as the Sales Coordinator for a Residence Inn hotel. I make $11.26 an hour and work Monday-Thursday from 8:30 AM-5:00 PM. I have just been offered the position of Administrative Assistant for the School of Music of the University of Miami. This offer pays $11.56 an hour and reuqires work from Monday-Friday 8:30 AM-5:00PM, but only pays for 37.5 out of those 40 hours (2.5 discounted for the 1 hour lunches I guess). The benefits about where I am right now is that my employer is very flexible, and allows me to take time off pretty much whenever I've needed to. However, there is no opportunity for growth within the company. At the University of Miami there are countless of opportunities, including wonderful benefits (tuition remission for my Masters degree). The major con is that I just found out I am pregnant last week and am afraid the stress of moving to another job will affect me. Do you guys think I should take this new job?

Thanks so much in advance for your answers!

Go for the second job. University is a great place to work and no one loses her job in a university because of pregnancy!

Normally, I would say take the job. However, to be able to take FMLA, you have to have been with the company at least one year. So, with your pregnancy, I would be concerned that you would only have vacation time available to you, and during your first 12 months I would be shocked if that was more than one week. Obviously, you don't want to risk losing a new job because you're required to take time off after the baby's born. It would be great if you could ask someone at the University (maybe a friend or an acquaintance that works there) what would happen in regards to time off after the baby was born. Some employers will allow you to use FMLA prior to the one year mark, so I would look through the employee benefits and see if that's mentioned... if you could use FMLA... take the new job. Good luck to you and congratulations on the pregnancy.

If there is absolutely no room for any growth or raises in pay, I would move on to the next opportunityty. But...The way this economy is..I'd take it for now and still look.

I love jobs with good benfits if they will give you money to take classes at the school thats a great thing. And also the pay is slightly higher. You could work the both of them at first and see how it is. Just work less hours at the hotel

Something isn't right if they are wanting to not pay you for the hours you work. That isn't legal.

That said and since you are pregnant you need to remember that you won't have been at the new job long enough for FMLA protection to cover you when you have the baby.
