Should I include my university in my resume? (Please read description)?
Last year I went to Queen's University in Ontario. I live in British Columbia so that's pretty far away. During my year there, some personal circumstances came up and I ended up having to drop all my courses at the end. I dropped them with the Dean's approval so they're not "Withdrawn" on my transcript, there's NOTHING on my transcript honestly, so it's almost as if I haven't really been there at all.
**Do I still have a right to tell any future employer that I have attended that university for a year?** I mean technically I did, but I didn't accomplish anything...
Also, because of this personal issue, I decided to take **one year off of university** during which to gather the pieces of my life into a semblance of order and also to make some money. **Do I mention this?**
This is my dilemma, tell them I'm going to University far far away and they'll just think "oh, she's only here for a couple months." On the other hand, tell them I'm taking a year off and they think (once again) "she's only here for a year. She's going to leave after."
If my university was closer, I would not hesitate to put it on my resume but because it is so far from home I feel like if I mention it, all I'm doing is advertising the fact that I'm only going to be there for a year. Usually this would be a no brainer and I would just mention it as natural as anything but because I dropped everything I almost feel like I'm not really a student there and don't have a right to be tooting their name around.
I know you should be honest to your employers so I'm leaning towards a "yes, include it" but I can't explain all of this in a resume that's supposed to represent the "best me" in a quick and snappy way so I feel like I'm just going to make a bad impression.

I don't think you should mention it if you received no passing grades for coursework OR degree. Location doesn't matter at all, people earn degrees in different countries and mention them. when I typed my resume, I listed the related course-work under my degree so that the employer knew exactly what I had studied. I don't think its fair to mention the Univ. name as the interview will likely ask you questions and you will have to respond with , I dropped all classes. Just leave it out and on your resume, if you are attending a college right now (not plan to) put Currently pursuing a _____ degree at _____University. |
