Should I feel guilty about quitting my job?
So I have been working at a retail store for about 3 weeks now and on Friday, I put in my two weeks notice for the following reasons:
1. I felt like the employers were treating me unfairly and taking advantage of me. One of the managers hired his friend and she just started out a week ago. I have an erratic schedule, while she got a more consistent schedule working all day shifts. I am made to work mostly night shifts because no one else wants to. I went and tried to talk to the manager about it, but he was reluctant to work with me. I know that it is retail and I have to be flexible, but I also have a fiance at home that I never got to see all that much and my family lives in another state so it was impossible to see them very often.
2. Also, I became miserable and depressed quickly. There are days that I feel so depressed that I don't feel like getting out of the bed. Furthermore, there haven't been days that I haven't come home and sobbed my eyes out about what happened at work.
3. I feel unsafe during the night shift. I work in kind of a bad neighborhood and there are some scary people that come in. One of them actually tried to kiss me!!! That was probably what broke the straw for me.
However, the fact that the economy is terrible out there and that I should have been happy to have a job in the first place and the fact that I should have known that things like that happen in retail make me feel terrible for hanging it up. I am the type of person who is sensitive and doesn't mind a lot of hard work. But I guess I did what I needed to do, however I still feel terrible. What do you all think?

You shouldn't feel bad but you should DEFINITELY leave on a good note with your employer and do not burn any bridges. You said you already gave notice so I'm hoping you did this professionally & without stating every reason you hate your job. I'm sure you wouldn't do that though, right? Anyway don't feel guilty about it. There are some jobs that are just not at all meant for certain people. I can't stand retail. I would rather pick strawberries in a field under burning hot sun than do that. Your safety and your well being is important. That said I come home quite often so stressed out that I'm actually shaking but this is my career so that gets weighed in because it's not just "a job" with low pay. I have to be willing to deal with some of this considering that I'm compensated for it & I know it's not going to be easy. But retail? No. It's not worth losing sleep over. Find something that suits your personality better and somewhere that you're sure you have other employees and backup if you have to place yourself in an iffy situation with a shift. Best of luck to you!!! Do not feel bad or guilty about this, not at this stage :-) |

Dont feel guilty !!! Yes, the economy is bad, but most companies know this and use it as an excuse to treat their staff like dirt. |

You certainly shouldn't feel guilty. You had valid reasons to quit your job. |
