Should I continue with my job or should I quit and go study?

I work in a 75K/yr job in IT. I have an offer of admission from europe for Masters in 'Data mining and Knowledge management'. First year in France, second year in Spain. It will cost me about 55K for the whole course, including living expenses. I am not a citizen of the US, but my Green Card is in process - but it will take about 8 to 10 years before I get it (unless immigration reform is passed, but that is another sad story altogether!). So I will have to try getting a job in Europe if I go forward with studies in Europe. Employment market in Europe is very hard to get into unless you are a citizen of one of the EU countries. Even if I get a job, It would possibly pay me about the same money as I get now, or lower (with higher taxes!). So, the questions is: should I continue with my job or should I quit and go study?

Do not forget the opportunity cost of not earning for 2 years. But also, the experience of studying in europe and indulging in the local cultures will be a great experience.

Well looks like you are taking a loooong vacation in Europe for $ 110, 000 ( 2 years missed pay). I would recommend sticking to your job, saving up and going to school part time in the US till you get your degree here and that way you will have a:

1. Green card when you are done

2. Job and experience in your current position

3. Degree in whichever field you choose to study in

Plus the bonus ********** you can go vacation in europe for the next 5 years with the $ 110,00 you save up. Problem solved :) you know who this is....

I think the best answer is something in-between if it's available. Work fewer hours and study part time to earn your degree. Even better, keep working the same hours and start with a course or two to get back in the swing of studying before making such a drastic change. If that's not an option, save up enough to live on for 2 - 2.5 years before quitting to go back to school. It may take 2 years to get a degree, but there will probably be some time between graduation and starting a job that needs to be covered too. In any event, start cutting down spending and saving as much money as you can right now.
