Should I be trying to find a summer job?

I'm 15 turning 16 in a little more than a month. My grandmother's constantly nagging, saying I need to go find a job. I already applied for SYEP but I'm pretty sure I didn't get in and the thing is, I don't know of a job/company that would want to hire a 15 year old when they can hire someone more experienced. I think I might go volunteer for a summer day camp or something but I don't know about a summer job. :/ I know people my age that DO have jobs though. Should I go look around my neighborhood for a job?

Most legitimate employers do require students to have a work permit, which in most cases, you cannot get until you are 16. Many employers like to hire inexperienced teens for the summer. They can train you the way they want you trained (no bad habits from previous employers) AND they can pay you less!

If you're interested in working, gaining experience, and making money, yes, by all means apply for jobs. Your alternative of volunteer work is also an excellent idea! Either way, you'll be busy and productive for the summer . . . always a good thing!
