I have a nose ring and am trying to get a job in retail at the moment... how do i casually mention (when i turn in my app or when i interview?) that i'd be willing to change it to a stud or take it out if policy required me to?

I have to congratulate you on being aware that this could pose an issue. Many young people are so use to them they take for granite that they will be accepted by potential employer's and this often is not the case. They go to the interview and fail to bring attention to it the way that you are here and their interview goes just great but then...... no phone calls for follow up interviews and they think it was just to to someone being more qualified when in fact it could very possibly been the facial jewelry that made them miss out on the job.

Employer's very much view their applicants as well as interview them. Especially for retail positions where the customer base is then face to face with the applicant and appearance is then very much scrutinized by the interviewer.

Don't mention it on your application as you don't want them to immediately judge the "unseen" you strictly on company policies that could be in place prior to your applying. Get your foot in the door first and foremost. Once your in the interview "do" bring attention to it and say "I'm not sure if you have a policy in place under your dress code that refers to body jewelry but if my nose piercing is against that policy please know that I will refrain from wearing my facial jewelry at work to abide by your policies."

This shows you have their interest at heart and are upfront with your interviewer showing you have nothing to hide and it reflects honesty and respect, both of which are critical traits any company looks for in their employee's.

Best of luck to you ! I hope this helps and for sure hope you land the job your looking for !! I've done many interviews of employee's looking for work with the companies I've worked for and can tell you this: your putting good thought into your interview processes.

Take it out when you go in to apply or interview. If you are hired you will be given a company policy on dress. If you can wear them, feel free, if you can't, don't. If you have a question (after you get hired) ask.
