Reference check question?

I received a formal offer letter, but it states that it is contingent on reference checks. Why would they offer me a job before checking my references? Now I'm worried because my last job was a student position in which I was to work a certain number of hours a month which I did not meet. Looks bad, I know. When I did work, however, my work was well received, I just stopped going because nobody seemed to care I was there and those that did gave me grunt work ie mopping floors etc. Again, I realize this was a mistake I made for not officially resigning. Any advice?

It is not unusual for an employer to offer a job and make it contingent on some other check, such as a background check or drug test. The fact they made an offer at all says you are qualified for the job.

Some companies have a very specific guidelines about background checks. If they find anything they don't like, the pull the offer. They are not obligated to explain why. On the other hand some companies are open to discussion. If they get a bad reference they might call you back and ask you for your side of the case.

Regardless, all you can do at this point is wait to see what happens. The best thing to do if you have a potential problem is to make the interviewer aware of what happened at your last job. If they know in advance that there was a problem with a prior employer, they might take that into consideration if that employer gives you a bad reference.

Have you got other references - they dont always have to be your last role. Also a reference must NOT saying bad/defamoratory about you, although an employer can refuse to give one (which is basic saying they dont like you, but it gives you chance to stand up for yourself)

Lets hope it doesnt come to that though - You have every right to write to your last employer and ask them for a copy of your reference- then you'll know what it's like.

Good luck
