Reference check: after background check?
I had a job interview last Friday and told the potential employer that I would like to know their decison ASAP as I have to make a decision on another job offer pretty soon. This Monday (the next business day), they did move forward as fast as possible by sending me a background check form for my signature and also requested 3 references from me. They told me that they would move forward to do both background check and reference check. However, I asked 2 of my references this Friday (a week after the interview) and none of them have been contacted by my potential employer yet. I start to get worried and am wodering if the reference check is usually done after the background check so that there is a delay of checking my references?

I have spent the last year 2 years researching and testing background check services for a consumer review site (http://www.CompleteReviews.net ) and in that time have run tons of background checks using many different companies. The reference checks and background checks are usually done simultaneously as they are usually done by different people. The background checks will be done by an outside agency and the reference checks are usually done by the company's HR department. Usually the bigger the company the longer the process takes. I have been hired at 2 different large companies and both times the process took close to a month. It can certainly be very frustrating! The good thing is that they sound very interested in you to be trying to rush things! |

Companies move at different paces and get these things done according to their procedures. Job applicants benefit from simply letting them do their job and providing additional information if necessary. It's OK to check with them around once a week to see how things are going. It's usually up to the applicant to decide how to prioritize the job offers they have by talking with each party. The idea is to be frank and open with each potential employer. There's really not much an applicant can do about how the company proceeds on reference or background checks beyond exercising patience. As always, politeness and a helpful attitude will go a long way in getting you the job and expediting the process. |
