Recent Grad: How much to ask for?

I'm a recent college grad with a BS who plans to pursue her MS & DBA. I am going to need management experience in order to get my DBA. The company I want to work for has a habit of "hiring from within" which means I'll have to start out as a PT associate (retail environment) and work my way up. [My goal is to hit FT status w/in the next 2 years] I intend to stay with this company for at least the next 10+ years while finishing my post-grad courses PT.

I've been working retail PT on and off since H.S. (Cumulatively b/w 3.5-4 years) and have a miniscule amount of supervisory & office experience (retail) mixed with some FT non-retail & volunteer experience (supervisory).

The minimum wage in my state is $8.25 - what do you think is a reasonable amount of wage to ask for/expect? Should I initially ask for more and then negotiate down?

Even if the company has a 'habit' of hiring from within, you should make a serious effort to apply for higher level positions before you settle for the PT Associate job. Your BA is valuable to you, and possibly to the company, but not as a PT Associate - your degree simply won't be put to use in that position, and has therefore lesser value. Expect entry level or minimum wage, even if you ask for more.

Personally myself i wouldnt take a 8.25 job if you just got a Bachelor Degree. I also just finished with a Bachelor in Business Administration and im getting offers like 45,000K per year which is a salary job. It would only make sense to work a job that gives you a higher status than someone without a college degree.

Yes, ask for more at the beginning of a negotiation, that way you have some room to compromise. Also apply at other companies to see if you can get a position elsewhere with higher pay or more likelihood for advancement. For statistical salary information check out salary.com and payscales.com
