Quit job, but paid for future already?

Hi - My new company only pays administrators once a month, on the 4th Thursday of the month. I am planning to quit this Friday, July 23rd. It literally says in the employee handbook that if you quit during your first 90 days of employment to not give any notice and just do it. This company is evil and I want out ASAP, so Friday will be my last day and I will give my notice at that point.

Now - on July 22nd, I will be paid for the month, which includes the workweek of July 26-30. Since that money will be in my bank account by direct deposit when I quit on the 23rd, what can my company do at that point? After taxes and deductions to my 401k, the amount in my account for July 26-30 will be a little over $900.

Thank you.

You will be asked to pay it back. They may have to recalculate your taxes and other deductions or they may just leave your deductions as is and have you reconcile them at the end of the year directly with the government when you file taxes.

You could make it easier by choosing to quit earlier to give them a chance to change your payroll, or lasting until the end of the pay period. Either way, you're not going to get an extra $900 without working those days, and you'll just be causing more problems than it's worth to go down that path.

Wait, they pay you for hours that you haven't worked yet? Are you sure? Most places that do once-a-month billing pay them for the PREVIOUS months' work (so, like, approximately June 22-July 22).

If they really do essentially pay you for the month of July before you've worked the month of July (which is a stupid thing to do, on their part) then you can expect to have to deal with them coming after you for the money and possibly having it go to collections or getting sued unless you cooperate right away. Companies don't mess around with collecting back pay. And, yes, it is perfectly legal for them to collect money for any wages that were given to you that you didn't earn. Even if it were their mistake, this would be the case. If they are really in the habit of paying people for a full month even if they haven't worked it yet, then my guess is that they will be very practiced in how to handle quitters (especially if they are evil and therefore have high turnover from new employees).

I'd probably figure out whether this is REALLY how they do it and, if it is, then I would recommend quitting on the 30th just so that you never have to deal with them again.
