I dont know which kind of Editor you're interested in becoming but I'll give you some info about them that I found online.. Hope it helps

Most editors enter the field with at least a bachelors degree. Although it is very important to have good reading and writing skills, the degree doesnt necessarily have to be in English literature, communications, or journalism. For example, a degree in computer science, business, or engineering would benefit aspiring technical editors looking to specialize in those fields. It is also useful to obtain specific training in publishing, editing, or a related field. Many colleges offer degree and certificate programs in these areas. Some programs, however, are for post-graduate students, which means you need a related bachelors degree before you can apply.

Perhaps the most important qualification for an editor to have is a well-rounded education and good general knowledge. Articles and books are published on virtually every subject”history, science, health, and economics, to name a few”so a broad academic background can be very useful. Editors should have excellent writing and grammar skills. They should also be familiar with copyright law and defamation law. Post-graduate studies in English, or any other humanities subject, will sharpen your reading and writing skills. A background in design would also be helpful since editors may deal with the appearance, or layout, of books and articles, not just their content and grammar. Editors should be organized and must be able to work well under pressure. They should also have good decision-making abilities.

Many editors work for newspapers, magazines, book publishers, and other companies that put out written materials. Online editors work for companies that have websites, or those that develop them. Technical editors work for software development companies, manufacturers, and legal and medical services.

Editors can make anywhere from about $27,000 to $90,000 a year. The median annual income for all editors is around $48,000. Those who work on a part-time basis, or who do freelance work, can earn between $25 and $100 an hour. The higher salaries and hourly rates are earned by those with many years of experience, who have established themselves in the field.

As well, editors in certain fields can command higher salaries and hourly rates. For example, technical editors who work on manuals and other documentation for the scientific or high-tech market tend to make more money than those who work on books and articles destined for the mass market.

There are many types of editors, newspaper editors, magazines, book editors, copy editors. All have slightly different roles. You would probably major in journalism or English. Generally at least a Bachelors Degree is necessary to be hired. Pay isn't that great, maybe $40s to $60s depending on location and type of editor. The big negative I see is that newspapers and magazines are in a downward spiral, those jobs are disappearing fast. Books are not much better. The trend is toward self-publishing, blogging, etc. - I think that is a sad trend but that discussion is for another question.

If you have a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be in front of of the masses when it comes to hunting for careers. My mate has a degree and he wasn't certain what direction to go with it, but he uncovered some great tips and tricks on the site in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is a lot of assistance on the site regarding extra careers.
