People, how did you choose your major?

Category: Other

I'm a college sophomore and I was aiming to be an optometrist but after taking a couple of science courses, I find myself dreading them. I'm currently really liking anthropology, but after looking career options for the major, I found that there aren't many and getting a job is HARD.

It also doesn't help that my mom really really wants me to have a health career. Every time I bring up the topic that it might not be right for me, she gets upset and refuses to talk about it.

So how did you guys make the decision of choosing your major and career?

How did I choose my major and career? To me, it's been very simple: PASSION. You may be successful by trying hard but it will be super stressful for you because without passion, you will get bored with your major/career/job easily. But if you don't have passion for anything, answer these questions:

A) What is your goal in life? Is it

1/ Become rich?

2/ Have an easy and enjoyable life?

3/ Please other people except yourself? <--- that is pretty sad but I bet that's what your mom's expecting from you

B) If you want to be rich, think about this: if the major you're aiming for makes good money and it is your passion, go for it, even if you don't make much money out of it, at least you will enjoy doing it. If it's not your passion, is it competitive? If it's not, then give it a try, even if you don't like it, at least you will get a job easily. If it is competitive and you don't have any passion for it, then forget about it, it's not worth all the stress.

C) If you want an easy and enjoyable life, then answer these questions:

1/ What is your hobby (what is productive such as writing, singing, drawing)? There's nothing better than making money out of your hobby. Even if you don't really make money, you still won't get stressed because you get to do what you love.

2/ Which subject did you enjoy the most in school?

3/ What is your special ability/talent? Are you good with math, drawing, communicating, dealing with people, memorizing things, etc.?

Don't mind your mom, you know your whole family would support you for whatever you choose, as long as you are sure it is the best for you. You only have 1 life so live your yourself! Your mom already has hers! After all, you're an adult, it's your life and it's your responsibility as well as your right to make your own decision. Your mom may not be happy with your decision at the moment but after she sees you succeed, she will eventually be convinced that you make the right choice. Good luck!

Let me ask you something.

Whats most important for you?

If you say - i wanna be rich - its an OK answer.

That said, what would you like - to have a job you love - but earn really low money or a job that you're not creazy about - which may even be boring or not cool - but which pays wicked good?

Thats usually how it goes - jobs that are the least interesting usually pay the best - e.g. insurance, real estate, auditing, accounting & taxation, actuarial science, etc.

If you think a career in healthcare is something that will give you a lifestyle you're gonna be happy with - then its an ok sacrifice to make.

The problem with following your heart when it comes to career is that unless your the best of the best at what you love to do - you're not gonna make decent money.

so thats how the cookie crumbles - its your move next.

All the best to ya.
