Part time jobs that allow dreadlocks?

Category: Other

I don't have dreads yet, but I'm hoping within the next few months once my hair grows out I will. I don't have a part time job yet either...economy sucks :( . Do you know of any part time jobs that would be willing to accept me with dreads?

Thanks :)

You will find jobs that don't want you to have dreadlocks. Some will also have it in the dress code that matted hair is not allowed.

Sure, maybe you can lie and say it's religious or spiritual but do you really want to start a job off on that foot? Do you think someone will hire you if the first thing you do is make a big stink about hair? I don't and I think starting off in that way gives employers the wrong idea. Soaring Eagle above me seems to be making this a little dramatic and in my opinion giving bad advice if your goal is to actually get a job and actually get employers to want to hire you. Sure it may be illegal if you have them for religious purposes but if you become difficult and self righteous you are giving them a reason not to hire you other than your hair. Trust me, you don't want to go into a job like that.

To actually answer your questions, many jobs accept dreadlocks! Even more straight laced jobs that you might not expect. I think what you have on your side right now is time. Definitely start looking for a job now before dreadlocks, it will be slightly easier than when you do have dreadlocks and you'll have to fight stereotyping in interviews. But even if you don't find a job before you start dreadlocks it's very easy to pull them up in a scarf and hide or at least camouflage them stylishly for interviews and it's very easy to pull the attention away from your hair and onto your personality and job performance instead.

So my advice is to be yourself and don't let your what you may or may not do to your hair worry you too much. Apply where you want to apply, there's really no way of knowing how they will see your hair, something you have to figure out as you go!
