My boss won't get off my back! What should I do?

Category: Other

Ok i work at a small food shop business, Although I don't let it known, I don't think much of my employers or their work ethic. Recently they have started employing 16 year olds offering them 3 month trial contracts and then getting rid of them after the trail has ran out - citing poor performance, they use other illegal methods - too numerous to mention.

So anyway recently my manager has been on my case constantly. It stemmed from one day when I was at work, and she decided to have a moan at the fact I was wearing black cargo trousers and not regular trousers - even though every person including her on my department wear either black jeans or black cargo trousers. I need to wear durable trousers because I work in a warehouse often.

Anyway she wasn't in work last weekend, yet she PHONED UP the deputy manager to ask if I was wearing black trousers - I wasn't, and the deputy manager lied for me since she thinks the whole thing is pathetic. On the phone she also told the deputy manager that I wasn't allowed to work on the tills or customer services any more - no reason was given, just that I wasn't allowed.

One particular member of staff keeps telling me about staff cuts, how they are looking at getting rid of particular members of staff. This person also is very close to the Manager, always sitting at her desk gossiping and brown nosing.

I cannot get another job - I have tried so hard! I cannot afford to get fired - I just know they will find an excuse, it's really starting to get to me since I have been there for 6 years! I really need some advice as to how to deal with this situation.

Start wearing the black trousers, even if everybody else is wearing black cargo pants or jeans, because obviously, you are *not* everybody else and this manager does not like you and is trying to get you ousted, so don't give her any just cause. Someone already lied for you and said you were wearing them..that's petty. Just wear them and keep looking for another job in the interim. Unless you've got some extensive criminal record, I don't see why you "cannot" get another job.

I agree...start wearing the pants you have been required to wear...doesn't matter who else is doing whatever else. You said you cant afford to get fired.....sometimes much as it pains us there is a fine line between kissing butt and saving your own. Its not fun and its not easy but until you find another job you gotta do what you gotta do. Don't compare the way your boss treats another to yourself...its only going to add more stress on you.

When she returns back to work surely she will let you know why you cant work the register but until then don't jump to conclusions....you're only going to make your performance suck and that calls more attention than what kind of pants your wearing!

You said you cant get another job..have you even started to look for another one? You have 6 yrs with this company....not sure exactly what you do there but thats 6 yrs of some kind of experience. If your that unhappy there I think you need to find some confidence within yourself and start looking/applying for other jobs.
