If someone hires you and then tells you they will call you in a day or so to tell you when they want you to start but then don't return your calls or tell you they will call you back but never do, is that illegal? i sent the guy a text as well asking if he would call me back and let me know when he wanted me to start and he texted back hours later saying good luck to you.

It's not illegal at all. It's rather a$$holey, but that's not illegal. Sorry.

I've had a very similar experience and its unfortunate. You are technically not an employee because you have no legal documentation that states you are so legally there is nothing you can do. It would be your words against theirs and would be incredibly hard to prove in court. Its best to move on and find that special company more deserving of your services.
