Job at Rockwell Collins or Pratt & Whitney?

Category: Other

SEALBoySEALBoy

I have been offered an entry-level engineering position at Rockwell Collins and Pratt & Whitney. I'm not sure which way to go, so I'm looking for advice from people who have worked at or know about these companies. I have a Bachelor's Degree in Aerospace Engineering.

Some details:

P&W: Mechanical Systems Engineering Position

+ Very interested in engine design

+ Job requirements are a good fit for my degree

- Interest is with inlet/nozzle/combustor design, not Mech. Systems (but may be able to transfer down the road)

RC: Systems Engineer

+ Pay is the same as P&W, but Cedar Rapids is MUCH cheaper than Hartford

+ I love nice quiet towns like Cedar Rapids.

+ More interested in avionics than in Mech. Systems, but less than nozzle/combustor/inlet

- Worried about initial performance since my degree did not go in-depth about Systems (especially software).

I would greatly appreciate any advice regarding my choices. Thanks!

I've never worked at either of those places but I do have a technical degree (C.S.) and have been in the workplace for over 20 years.

We're talking about your first job here (i.e. they'll expect you to do some on-the-job learning and you could always switch employers in a few years if you decide that things aren't ideal), they're both good firms, both jobs are related to what you studied, and both pay the same.

Given all that, since Cedar Rapids is cheaper and you like it more, I would go with Rockwell Collins. Remember that your life outside of work is pretty important!

If you own a degree - or any other qualification - then you'll already be in front of of the bunch when it comes to searching for professions. My friend has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he stumbled upon some good tips on the website in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is loads of guidance on the website regarding other professions.
