Is this a uniform or a dress code?
I was hired (after no full time work since 11/09) by a carpet cleaning firm. You have to wear Dickies work clothes. For pants, regular fit, relaxed fit or regular fit pleated are OK. They can be Navy or Khaki. As for shirts, Dickies long sleeve or short sleeve Navy or Khahi. I got all Navy, because the store told me that's what 90% of my co workers wear. I chose the relaxed fit pants because I want to be comfortable.
Shoes must be clean, new black oxfords. They will "give" me a windbreaker in the fall, after my 90 day probation is up. They gave me a voucher to use at the store they deal with. Two pants, two short sleeve shirts, two long sleeve shirts. That's $120 worth of clothing. I get to pay it back $10 a week for 12 weeks. The store sews on the company patch but I don't pay for that. I had to put out $30 for new shoes, which was pretty hard for me.
I was under the impression if it was a uniform, the employer paid for it. If it was a dress code, I paid for it. When I was a kid, I had a job at McD's. They provided 2 uniform shirts to start. Later you got more. Never paid a dime for that kind of stuff. Now with money being tight, I have to pay for uniforms. I don't think this is right. May not even be legal. Any experiences with this? Thanks.

Dress code, not a uniform. The required items are all 'regular' clothing you can also wear in your personal life, which you could not do with a uniform (for example, a McD's uniform). |

Companies can require you to pay for any or all of your required uniform. It is usually spelled out when you are hired, and you retain the decision to work for them or go somewhere else. |
