Just wondering, is there such job where you get paid to make story ideas for games?

Of course! But in order for anyone to hire you for that, you would of course need to be equipped with a comprehensive understanding and set of skills for the game industry.

My brother has just finished a Bachelor's degree in Real-Time Interactive Simulation from DigiPen Institute of Technology near Seattle, Washington. Their campus is near Nintendo and Microsoft. His degree is basically an IT degree in computer programing and the production design of video games. Besides the obvious IT, science, and math classes, he also took subjects like Japanese language, Greek mythology, graphic design and animation, artificial intelligence, various literature classes, and how to write stories for a game.

Every year, my brother pays $800 to go to this Game Developers' Conference (GDC) in San Francisco during Spring Break. It's a huge conference lasting several days with various lectures and workshops given by some of the greatest names in the gaming industry.

So to answer your question, yes, there are jobs for those who write stories for video games. But in order for the industry to trust you as a professional who qualifies for that, you need to learn the entire trade first. What many people fail to notice is that college is not just a place to take classes and sit in exams; it is also a valuable place to find out the latest buzz in the industry and build connections with people in the industry who would like to get to know you professionally and perhaps like a chance to work with you in the future.

Yes, but it's terrifically hard to get into & you'll be more successful if you either have experience making up stories in other media (like writing books or tv scripts) or if you have other skills required for successful game programming (and for this, there is a wide range anything from marketing to programming skills).

the problem usually is that there's no way to qualify that your story ideas would be any better than anyone else's story ideas... and since stories are incredibly arduous to program, there needs to be something that predicts future success. With a book deal, then at least *someone* is buying your stories, and a "successful" book is one that sells 5,000 copies or more.

The other option is to program a basic version yourself -- and then once it's selling, revamp it into a more full-fledged version of the same game -- a number of people have had good success with this method in writing games for iPhone.

Here's a good place to start, though:
