I am looking to major in social work when I start college in the fall.

Is it a good career to go into?

Pros and cons?

Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

I am leaning towards Foster Care And Adoption Social Work.

Depends on what your goals are. Social work is one of the most personally rewarding jobs but it is also the most demanding job that pays nearly nothing.

A social work BA will take you 4 years to complete. If you want to actually counsel people you will be required to go back and get your Master's which will take an additional 2-3 years. Plus depending on your state requirements for licensing you will need up to 3000 supervised work hours to qualify for the licensing exam. On average it takes most people 2-3 years to complete their 3000 hours. Keep in mind that most internships are unpaid.

A social worker right out of college will make approximately $28,000 - $35,000 per year. SInce most are state or government workers you can expect to make a mediocre salary for the rest of your life. Make sure you check in to CPS programs, many have tuition packages where CPS will pay for your full education if you commit to 2 years working at the agency upon graduation.

The work can be extremely rewarding but emotionally tough on you. You'll have to be able to handle dealing with the harsh reality of life out there when working with kids. There are parents who do horrible things to their kids and you'll have to be good at separating work from personal and NOT bring those burdens home with you especially when you are married and have kids of your own.

Social workers have a hard time separating the two and the work can become very draining and stressful...leading to depressing and often personal problems in the home. (Divorce...etc)

Look up social work on the BLS job outlook guide. It's a guide put out by the government about all sorts of different careers, the salaries, the training required, etc.
