Is it wrong to leave out a job in the resume?

Category: Other

In the past 10 years, I have 4 jobs. The first job I worked for 2 years, second job I worked for 5 months, third job for 2 years and my present job for 4 years. It is this second job that I was let go because of performance issues - I was stressed out by a personal matter. They sent me a letter to let me go at about the same time I sent them a letter to resign.

I've been applying for jobs lately and in my resume, I did not list this second job that I was "let go". Is this wrong? If I get hired by a company and suppose the company finds out that I left the second job out in the resume, can the company fire me for not listing this second?

In my opinion, leaving a gap on your resume may prompt more questions as to what you did during that time, and to explain it away could make it as something you are hiding. Not a whole lot here regarding exactly what you did, but assuming it was a tough time and you didn't have your "A" game, many employers will confirm you worked there, and provide salary information only. They generally do not give out information as to why a person left. No guarantees just the same. The fact you have been somewhere for the past four years demonstrates that you can hold a job. In my case, I put a job on my resume that was only one month, because in good conscience, I did not want to ever have that on my mind. Sounds like it simply wasn't a good fit at time. Your call. Your resume. All the best.

Myself I am of the opinion that letters are good, assuming they are composed utilizing good punctuation and spelling (always use a spall chocker!). You can find some good tips and tricks for composing letters by learning from the site in the box below, it's got lots of other stuff about job seeking as well.

Leaving the job out is not a problem. Having a gap in the resume is a problem.

If you went right from the first job to the second and then replaced the second job right away (meaning you only have a five month gap), then you should not have a problem.

If, however, you have periods of unemployment before and after the second position, then you might have some explaining to do.
