Is it true that in some careers, ugly people get paid less?

Someone who's a journalist told me this. is it true?

Yes statistics do show that attractive people get paid more and have a better chance of getting hired and promoted in jobs than their less attractive counterparts.

In fact, people are more ready to associate attractive people with positive characteristics such as kindness, intelligence, truthfulness, etc than less attractive people.

Also, height can also influence how much you get paid: taller people tend to get paid more than their shorter counterparts.

Here is just one out of many articles I found on Google just now: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/scienc¦

EDIT:

To answer your other question about whether a less attractive person will still get paid less even if they do perform better at work - not necessarily. In fact, that article above mentions that this is what can make the tide turn in favor of the less attractive individual - performance and ability. There is in some way more pressure put on the more attractive person to do well, but if he/she doesn't measure up to expectations, then the less attractive person who performs better will gain more respect.

Please bear in mind that there are other kinds of social factors that influence how much one is paid (such as height, sex, seniority) - looks are just one of them, not the deciding factor.

Good looks can get you noticed, but won't take you far without talent and ability.

Essentially, yes. Because of the attractive people getting paid more, that in turn leaves uglier people with the "short end of the stick" as it were.

May's answer is much more educated then mine.

Not necessarily, and no if you own the business, if you are the child of the owner or if you manage it.

The thing is we live in a society that is unfair and so that journalist who told you this might be right to a certain degree but not 100% of the time of course.
