Is it too late to take this new career path?

DuhDuh

I am 28, I have school debts, rent, etc like anyone else. I went to university, got a degree in economics and communications; I currently work as an analyst for a major financial institution, making about 50k. I dabble in other interest as well; one of them being cooking. While on vacation last week, a friend of mine, who happens to be the head chef at possibly the best restaurant in our city, and offers me (for the second time) a job as a saucier. It would be the third ranked job in the most prestigious restaurant in the city. Problem is, it only pays $35k a year. I am not as experienced or trained as those even ranked lower than saucier; and the resto is only open Monday - Friday, so I can't even do a part time position if I wanted.

Most people who start in the industry, start earlier than 28. Is it too late to change career paths?

I wouldnt leave a position as a Financial analist for cook...

If you're really bored why dont you change job (in your own field), there must be better opportunities than an saucier for sure. A friend of mine was a head chef and now he is cooking for a federal instirution, just to garantee him a retirement plan

If it is something you truly love, and you can live on that salary I say go for it.

But you have to consider

-can you pay off your debts with this job

-can you have a future with this job

-could you get married and raise a family with this job

-etc

weigh all the good things and the bad.

On average you have about 52 years left to do whatever your heart desires to do. I would rather get paid 35k and be happy than be miserable in a monotonous job. We all have debts, rent, and etc. Trust me you'll make it work...it's human nature. Go for it and in five ten years from now who knows where you will land. Good Luck!
