Is it rude in a job interview to for an employer to say and do the following?

Category: Other

the manthe man

1. when they ask you if you have a criminal background? and you say no, and they say I will find out, and I say i do not and they say "look i will find out... "

2. to ask me what my wife does, I said she has arthritis and watches our kids and then he was like, oh well "how do you all make it?"

3. then he said what i see here is a "victim of the recession"

are these things rude? should this be someone i should work for if i get the interview

i really need a job but are these flags of how this job will go?

and also he had a secretary writing mostly everything down that was said basically eyeballing me the whole time.

Sounds like a mom-pop shop where they never learned employee relations. This type of place, I would not seek further. If you had such an experience beforehand, just think what kind of horrible working conditions you will experience after being hired. You can also contact the EEOC or the labor department of your state and get some guidance.

This is rather disturbing and others need to know about its existence. Its to address standards and how job seekers should not tolerate inappropriate questions. Its also against your rights.

Sounds pretty rude. It doesn't sound to me like you'd get the job, but even if they'd offer it to you, I'd turn it down. Then again, in this economy, I'd rather work for a complete a$$hole than not have a job at all. But yes, I think it sounds like they were being rude. I guess it all depends on how they said it.

Sound like more than rude. In some cases concerning your marital status and your wife's health condition he is asking question that are illegal. I would suggest you go to the EEOC or you might want to find yourself a lawyer and file a suit against him for discrimination. Might be a way to pick up $5,000 just to go away and teach him a lesson. Nice that he had his secretary take notes and write it all down. I think a lawyer would love to see those notes.

Perhaps unprofessional, but not at all illegal. If you choose not to answer those questions, re-direct them with something like, "I am finding it difficult to see how this relates to this job opening." The secretary writing it down is not common, but is also not illegal.

If you don't like how they interview, you will probably not like working for this organization. Again, nothing illegal in any of it. Hope this helps.
