You don't have to choose a major right away. Most colleges and universities have what is called "distribution of studies" for your freshman and sophomore years, where you take classes in a variety of science and humanities topics. Pick some basic courses (English composition to help you with writing papers in any subject, intro to Chemistry or Biology if you think you might go into medicine or science, Anthropology or Pyschology if you think you would be interested in working with people, Economics or History if you are interested in business or law) as well as anything that appeals to you like Astronomy or a foreign language. And you can always change your major as your interest develops in one field of study or another. I changed my major 4 times before I graduated and actually ended up in a completely different field than anything I studied eventually in my career. But I still gained a great deal of education and experience from getting a degree.

In fact, I would say MOST of my friends did not know exactly what they wanted to be when the entered college but found something that they liked or had an aptitude for by taking classes in it. And even many that were SURE they wanted to go into a specific field ended up changing their minds after studying for a while and finding something they liked better. In fact, if you are unsure of what you might like to do, your best bet for enrolling in college is a large state university with a wide variety of departments. If your parents or the school pressure you into declaring a major early on, don't worry about it -- changing your major is a really common thing in college and you will have plenty of time to work that out.

College isn't trade school -- part of its purpose is to expose you to a broad range of knowledge, not to just slot you into some specific career. Relax and approach it with an open mind.

Hey. go to a trade school. You can go through quicker training and still get a good job like a nurse, medical assistant, or enginieer.

I would suggest doing some volunteer work. If your mom thinks you might make a good nurse, you can volunteer at a hospital. Or you can look for internships over the summer, to see if another career might be good for you. Community college counselors or high school counselors can help with this. Also look at your favorite classes, what do you enjoy doing? Try looking for a career that utilizes those skills.

Another thing you can do, if you're really not sure where you want to go academically, is instead of going straight to a 4 year university which can be REALLY expensive and a huge commitment (not to mention most require that you declare a major) spend a semester or two at a junior college. You can take general education classes for less money than at a 4 year, and you can give yourself time to think about what you want to do, without delaying your education.

In my opinion you do not need to know what you want to do for the rest of your life before you go to college. I didn't. If you go to a four year university or college you will have to take generals your first year or so and this will give you time to explore your options. Figure out which classes you enjoy and utilize the on campus resources (such as career counseling and student groups) to determine where your interests lie. Don't rush into a decision just because others are telling you to decide now.

Job shadowing or volunteering can also be very helpful in narrowing down your future options. If your mom thinks you should be a nurse, ask her to find someone that you can shadow for a few days, watch what nurses do and see if you feel it would be right for you. If it's not, then you know. Volunteer with some local organizations that assist various underserved groups of people. Maybe you'll find out that working with children or elderly intrigues you. Or maybe you'll find out that office work, finance or accounting are more your style. At any rate, putting yourself in situations that are outside of your comfort zone or outside of your normal routine will greatly assist you in figuring out who you are and what your passions are in life.

Step 1: QUIT applying for colleges.

Step 2: Figure out what you WANT to be when you grow up.

Step 3: find out what you need to do to to be that.

Going to college is a WASTE of time and money unless it DIRECTLY contributes to what you want to do with your life.

As for how everyone else decided what they wanted to do, most people NEVER did. That is why so many people hate to go to work.

No problem. Just finish your senior year, go to college and work on the basics you first two years. If you think of something that interests you during that first 2 years then take a class or two in it.

There is no reason you have to lock in a major before your junior year in college.
