If you have another prospective employer, why do temp agencies ask who it is?

I had a good interview yesterday with one company, and another good one this morning with another company. The guy at the agency that put me in touch with the company I interviewed with this morning wanted to know what the name of the other company was that I interviewed with yesterday (since I told him yesterdays' interview went well).
1. Why do they ask what was the name of the other company?
2. After giving him the name (potential mistake) he was searching his database to see if he had any contacts at that company (the company from yesterday's interview). Did he plan on calling any contacts he might have had as a way to try to sabotage my second interview with them (a few days from now) so that I would go with the company he presented me to this morning?
3. Next time I get a question like this asking who the other company is, I don't want to tell them who it is. How should I tell them this, in a polite, tactful way?
