What are some key points I have to include? I've never written one before, and I really need to get a job, my family is in a very bad state, and I don't want to have to ask for money anymore. I'm a 16 year old girl, I've helped out at some jobs, but never been officially hired. I know how to work a cash machine. I need to know some of the stuff to put on a resume, what should I include? I need a detailed answer, pleaaasee!

Thanks :)

First of all, there are a lot of myths regarding resumes. The biggest is the cover letter. If you are directly handing your resume to managers, there is not a need. At 16, you are not going to apply to positions requiring a cover letter. You're just starting, you have nothing to really put into a cover letter that wouldn't be on your resume. So, here's how to craft your resume.

You'll want to format with your name in the center, or upper right hand corner. Underneath your name, list your phone number. The next line write your e-mail. So make it like this:

John Smith

555-555-5555

johnsmith@yahoo.com

NEVER Put your vital information such as birthday or social security number directly on your resume!

Next you'll want to write your Goal or Objective like this:

OBJECTIVE: I wish to obtain a position to utilize my outgoing personality and customer service skills (or whatever skills you have relating to this position). Just basically write something to showcase your personality or knowledge here.

The next piece will be your experience. You'll want to write your experience like this:

McDonald's July 2009 to Present (always list your most recent experinece first)

Cashier (or whatever the official title is for your position).

Then just list your responsibilities like this

- Assisting customers with orders

- Maintaining the front registers and cash drawer

- Ensuring cleanliness of restaurant

- Resolving customer issues and concerns

then your next experinece in the same format.

Finally list your education with the school and your degrree, or diploma, etc. If you do not have your diploma yet, no problem just put your school and the diploma followed by "In Progress" and your anticipated graduation date.

This will be a good start for you. DO NOT WRITE PARAGRAPHS. There's not enough time for most managers to read paragraphs. Keep everything to the point, and show your relevant experience for the job.

It must look very professional first off. Make a cover letter

Key points: Education, Work History/Experience, Specials skills, Any Certificates/Awards

I think Microsoft Word has some basic Templates

I would recommend a Basic Resume with emphasis on your skills because you have little job experience

If you pay a couple extra bucks go to kinkos and get it done on nice paper

Kyle gave great advice! There are templates and more advice available online; if you use Microsoft word, check out it's template. Once you've put together a first draft, post it here for more advice (just leave out your personal info).
