I lied in a job interview on a behavioral question, what should I do now?
I was asked if I'd ever had a conflict with a co-worker and how I resolved the situation, and I really have never have had a conflict, but obviously you can't say that, so I made up something about a shift leader at my last job (food service) dropping food on the floor and me telling the store manager and the shift leader getting fired. I also wrote on my applicaton that they could call my old boss, but I scibbled it out when the interviewer wasn't looking because I was afraid I'd be found out. The interviewer asked me to come back tomorrow to meet the head store manager. I feel terrible about lying, and I won't do it again. Should I go meet the general manager and come clean, or just blow off the meeting tomorow and never go back? If I don't go, I won't be inconveniencing the general manager because the store's having a job fair tomorrow so he'll be talking with potential employees anyway instead of working. What should I do? And yes, I know it's bad to lie in an interview, I don't need a scolding.

I wouldn't take the job. If they call, don't answer. Otherwise, you risk getting found out while you're actually in the job itself. Learn from it, take this as a lesson and figure out what to say next time. I also suggest googling for interview questions and finding out what the best answers to say are....keep it real, sis! |

You made a mistake and it sounds like you learned from it. So move on. If they asked you to come in tomorrow then you must have passed the interview. Go meet the head store manager and make it a point to put your best foot forward from here on out. They won't go back to verify your situational interview answers. HR only asks those questions to see how you handled situations in the past. It's supposed to give us an idea of how you would react in the future in a similar situation. |

Ok, I know that you don't want us to tell you that what you did was wrong, but honestly, why'd you lie? If you never did get in a fight, then you should have just said it.....they can't tell you your lying. Anyways, I think you should just forget about it, and don't tell the person your meeting tomorrow because that will probably loose you the job. I know that you shouldn't lie again, but if you want that job just forget about it and start clean :) Good Luck! |

Go and keep quiet about it. If it they bring it up, admit it. The worst that will happen is that you won't get the job. If you don't show up you won't get it anyway. |

Your gaff isn't nearly as bad as you think. I have been a hiring manager. It is not normal to check details as of a specific story. When contacting a previous employer, it is standard to check dates of employment, salary history, basic job dutiesm and eligibility for rehire. If any additional questions are asked it is normally questions about reliability, punctuality, and general ability. |

Never lie. There is nothing wrong with saying, "We all have disagreements from time to time, but I really can't think of any serious conflicts I've had. I was fortunate to have worked with a great crew at my previous job." |
