I have an issue...I hope I don't OFFEND anyone or I hope no one offends me...but on Monday I have an interview?

In Beverly Hills, CA and I am so nervous about it. It's not because I feel like I don't have the qualifications or that the employer or interviewer is not going to love my personality and what I can bring to the company (I had a phone interview and they loved my CL and Resume and my bubbly personality). But I think I'm going to get discriminated against because one, my race, I'm black and two my weight! It's Beverly Hills for god sakes, the home of rich, skinny and beautiful white people, where image is everything. Why would they hire a big black girl? Don't get me wrong I'm a pretty girl but my weight is not. I had a baby 9 months ago and gained about 70lbs during and after my pregnancy altogether. I want to lose weight but I can't lose 70lbs in 2 days! Should I just disregard my insecurities and go for the job or should I just not go at all and miss out on a great opportunity...btw I applied for the receptionist position and I'll be the first person clients will see. OMG!!! HELP! HELP! Please give me an honest answer but not rude. And the BBW association please don't hit me up with big is beautiful LOL! Sorry it's not! PS: Curvy, thick women are beautiful but if you weigh like 380lbs and you think that's cute, it's not.

Hi Rachel

Don't let your insecurities get in the way of a great opportunity. If you skip the interview because you think you're already doomed, you will kick yourself forever because you had a great opportunity and you sabotaged yourself and let it pass you by. Add to that the fact that you'll harm your future chances if you do a no show, which will leave the company with a terrible impression of you. I applied for a reception job a few years back, just because I saw an ad in the paper and it was local and seemed like it'd be a handy place to work. I didn't think I would get it, and I'm not exactly confident in my nature, but I figured I would at least submit my resume, not expecting anything to come of it, so that I could at least say that I tried. From that I had an interview and ended up getting the job, where I'm still working years later. So do NOT let this opportunity pass you by just because you think they won't want a "big black girl" working the front desk.

I've never been to Beverly Hills, but I'm familiar with the stereotype but can't really help you there. You say they already love your bubbly personality, so just let it shine through during the interview and wow them! Be yourself, they already have a good impression of you from the sounds of things, and while they may be a little taken aback when they meet you if they were expecting a skinny white girl, that good first impression should be strong enough for them to look past that. Who cares if you're not a tiny white girl? So long as you appear confident in yourself and your abilities, and dress appropriate for the office and look like you take care of yourself (well-groomed, clean clothes and hair, etc), then you should be just fine =) If they mention your weight at all (which would be totally rude and inappropriate, but you never know...), just tell them that you recently had a baby and that you're working on improving your health or something.

If you've got a warm, friendly and bubbly personality, make sure you show them that during the interview so that they see that you would be the perfect person to man the reception and the first one clients will see. While they may consider your looks, personality is the key in reception jobs and they should be able to recognise that and realise how good you'll be for the position. But seriously, by NO MEANS let this gig pass you by, as it's not worth it and you'll kick yourself afterwards!! Good luck! =)

I wish I could say that it didn't matter what you look like (weight) but unfortunately research on employment and looks indicate that thin, gorgeous people usually have a much easier time getting jobs and then getting promotions. However, that does not mean that an overweight person can't get a good job and do very well. I work with many such. You sound like you have a great personality and really what is needed for a receptionist job is a great personality. Just remember to wear clothes that flatter you, they say that black clothing always hides any extra weight we may be carrying. Let you personality show through and be confident! Good luck, I hope you get the job.

Do you sound like a white girl on the phone? I mean otherwise they must know you are a female of color already right?

As far as weight, the company is far more concerned with what skills you bring to the company than your weight. The company want's to make money, if you can help them make more money they are not going to be concerned with your weight.

Focus on your skills and think positive. Don't focus on negative issues or let your mind get wrapped around superficial issues such as your weight or race.

Use The Secret... See yourself getting the job, envision yourself already working for them and the lifestyle you will have working at the company. SEE IT In your mind and it will become reality.
