I'm a 19 year old fresh out of college and applying for jobs but not having much luck, what are the best ways for me to get a job? what career paths are always in need of people? (aside from the military)

Anything nursing/medical-related and teaching seem to always be in need, at least in the US. It's hard for someone right out of college to get that kind of job without more schooling.

Another thing that works (again, a US thing--don't know about your country) is starting out with jobs in retail and hospitality. You don't usually need much work experience to get these jobs and they seem to rely on young people like you. Your goal is not to stay at the job for life but to get customer service skills that will be valuable in helping you move up and get better jobs.

There are so many options but the best way of searching jobs from home is online searching. You can search jobs using this link:

Hi there

There is an awful lot of talk about how its impossible to get a job. Yes - it is harder when the economy is down but it isnt impossible. Really it isnt.

In fact this time being harder - working hard to achieve that first job will teach your some valuable life lessons for life!

Rule one. Do not get disheartened. Ever. Really! There is no point. It wont get you anywhere but miserable and people wont employ a miserable person. Even if you are feeling disappointed - stick your head back up there and try try try again. Smile! Be cheery! Sound positive! Feels hard if you arent feeling it - fake it till you make it darling! Smile smile smile! Even on the phone! A good one is always infectious!

Rule two. Get some experience. I dont know if you have worked at all before - your question doesnt say so. You need experience to get a job - if you dont have any that can seem like a catch 22 but it really isnt. You have several options still open to you. 1. Volunteer. There are many organisations and charities out there that would be very graetful for your help and you will be able to list your roles and responsibilities on your resume as work experience even though it is stated as voluntary. You will also be able to state (importantly as a charectar trait) to future employers that you would rather be out there being active and working than sitting at home doing nothing and have something to talk about in terms of projects / challenges / experiences. 2. Work for free. Either for friends and family who have companies but cant afford to take on staff. Again - you will be able to state the above to future employers. 3. Offer yourselves to the types of companies you would like to work for for free. Put together a little resume and letter stating that you understand they arent recruiting at the moment but you are very keen to work in their sector and wondered if they would consider taking you on for no pay for 1 month. You would be able to help them out and gain an understanding / experience. If you do a good job for them - and a position comes up - they will contact you - or talk about you to other companies. Again something else to put on your resume. You may want to put a note on your cover letter asking if they know anyone else in another company that might be able to use your skills to pass your details on. All of this will put you head and shoulders above the competition.

I have to state here that if you look at the above and say 'im not working for free' you are the sort of person who wont get ahead in life. If you look at the above and think 'why not. Im trying everything else at the same time so this could help me in the long term' you are a hard worker and WILL get ahead in life.

Rule 4. Tell everyone you know (and their aunties, grandmas and hairdressers!) that you are looking for work and how hard you are looking. There is nothing quite like the gossip train and who knows who knows who!

Rule 3. Do not be over cautious with where you send your resume. Do not limit the number of applications you send. To a certain extent this is a numbers game. Give yourself a task. 5 new companies / people / agencies / friends to contact every day. Call them - ask them if they have anything / know of anything. Yes - great. No - can I forward you my details in case something comes up? (time to include your free offer). Call a few days later for a quick cheery 'hi! - i just wanted to check my details came through ok (say you were having a few problems with your email if you arent certain how to approach that) they did? wonderful! if you have any questions please just give me a call or drop me an email..... thank you - bye!' Saying that - when you send off your details to a company do a little research first - have you just read something in the local paper about a scheme / project - mention that in your cover letter - Dear whoever... I have been reading with interest about your working with kids (or whatever!) project.... I would be very interested to work in this field - please find attached my resume) - it doesnt need to be much but try and show that you arent just spamming.

If you are feeling nervous about interviews or calling places - dont worry - most people are when they start. But practice will help an awful lot. Just stick your head down and go for it. When I first became a recruiter I hated picking up the phone to call new clients for work - sent me into panic! But by the end of my career I loved it and was great at it! Noone else loved it - but I did - it was fun trying to make the person at the other end laugh. Once I had that - I was in!

Well done for asking though - and for being keen to get a job. Youve started on the right path already.

Don't be afraid to get your hands dirty, don't settle for just any job, that's for us people who have lost the will to live and work for agencies. At your age avoid agencies like the plague, they will suck the very life out of you for minimum wage. Go back to school get a degree or get yourself onto an apprenticeship scheme. Plumbing bricklaying car mechanics Diesel/plant fitting, joinery CNC machinist, apprentice 3rd year sparks can make 15 quid an hour, there is big money there but you have to apply yourself and put the time in.

Though you didn't state your course of study, making reply on carrer path hard, the following will do: Work on your resume and cover letter to reflect what employers want. Also work on your personality traits - be performance driven. And prepare yourelf for aptitude tests.
