I can't get a job...?

Category: Other

This may seem more like I'm venting rather than asking a question, but I feel like a lost puppy.

I just turned 18 a couple months ago and I start college in a few weeks. I already have an Associate of Arts Degree (I started dual-enrollment my junior year) and worked with my dad as a vet tech/receptionist one summer. It was an okay job; problem was that it was conflicting with my school schedule and it was kind of difficult working for my dad because he had to be tougher on me than the other employees so it wouldn't look like I was getting better treatment. But I was still good at it.

I volunteered at this group counseling center for about a year and it was mostly administrative work.

I'm a fast learner, I work well with others, I'd like to think that I'm intelligent, I have SOME experience... What am I doing wrong?

I applied to as many places as I could, called a few times to make sure they received my applications (but not too many times so I don't annoy them), but I'm getting SQUAT. :(

Even Domino's won't take me. WTF

It's not your fault hun, the economy at the moment has been awful - so many people being made redundent trying to find work and also people who haven't been made redundent, it's a nightmare at the moment.

What's your C.V like? Companies like to make a big song and dance about an impressive C.V that makes them want to give you an interview, if it doesn't grab their attention staight away they just trash it. So you gotta make your C.V interesting in the first 10-20 seconds they read it (Believe me it;s true, I've been put on enough bloody work courses and they reiterate all the time about what makes a good C.V)

This is one of many websites on how to set out a C.V and wording it correctly.

It might not be your C.V after all this, it's a guess really, but from what I've been told, seeing as the C.V is your first point of contact, it's the main reason that employers have on deciding whether or not they should give someone a chance.

I hope I helped and good luck!

If you own a degree - or any extra qualification - then you'll already be ahead of the crowd when it comes to looking for vocations. My mate has a degree and he wasn't sure what direction to go with it, but he discovered some great tips and tricks on the website in the resource box below which guided him to decide that he wanted to be a lab assistant. There is plenty of guidance on the website regarding extra vocations.
