I am starting a new job on Monday and I am really nervous! I don't have any experience and don't want to get fired for going too slow (It has happened to me before). The boss has so much confidence in me. I don't want to let him or myself down. Please help! Thanks in advance. By the way, it's an office job in the accounting/eligibility department. Oh and this is the one job I wanted more than any other job I applied for.

First of all, congrats on getting the job, especially the one that you wanted most. I hope you don't mind when I say "Trust in God" on Yahoo Answers. I am not trying to use that as an easy answer, but I hope you feel you can pray for strength and wisdom. Similarly, trust in your boss that he/she has the experience to pick out the best candidate out of plenty of applicants. That's YOU.

For everyone else reading, the practical answer is that accounting/eligibility requires more detailed work, so accuracy is more important as opposed to speed. That may be different type of work in your past job so don't let that hang over your head.

To help quickly getting up to speed on the job, take notes and ask plenty questions when you are being shown around and how to do the work. That way you truly understand what is the big picture about the company and on the work. It is perfectly OK to take your time on your first few days, so make the most of this period of being the "new kid" because you cannot possibly be expected to work at full speed on Day 1.

Make friends, both to help make you feel at ease, and help you with work related questions. If you are naturally slow, you can ask your new co-workers (not the boss) if there are Excel shortcuts or other tips and tricks to do the work. If the new environment does not seem friendly, look for some tutorials online (Google for educational sites or YouTube) and train yourself at home. Good luck!!
