I am having problems at work, do I have any career left in this job?

I am an IT programmer. I am with my current employer from 7 years now. In 2008, I went through divorce and I got very unstable, I took some leave on short notice and upto 15 days of sickness. I was unwell, and couldn't sleep at night , possibly going through depression as well.

My new boss joined the same year, and he obviously got wrong impression of me.

in 2009, 2010, I have done a lot of good work. My projects were very successful. My relationship with my boss has been mixed. Sometimes good and sometimes not so good. I had a row with him when he dropped very gross and unfair feedback on my work. And, he put me on PIP.

Obviously, he couldn't sack me using the PIP as I am a very competent programmer and My team mates are appreciative of my work.

Now, my boss has been nit-picking like, questioning my 3 days sickness absence in this year when he ignores other people's long term absences. I think he definitely wants to push me out of the company. He has also threatened me with a sack during 1-1.

I was distressed and now have stopped all communication with my boss. Also, my boss has been promoted to head and won't manage me directl but will be my new boss's boss.

Do you think that this will improve my situation now?

I'm not sure what's going on, but document your interactions with him, but not where he or any other co worker can see. dont leave it on your work computer they can find it there.i dont know what will happen, but dont let this put you in a negative place, you went through a dicorce, and hopefully overcame that, but make sure you do things for yourself, healthy and positive to keep a good head on your shoulders. stand up for yourself without getting angry, dont be nice just be staright forward. if he is trying to get you out of the company document everything he does to you or says about you or your work. i think its good you dont talk to him, if he gets rude just walk awya. dont try to be buddies with him, he did not get the wrong idea about you, he is a jerk. you didnt do anything wrong, and do not need his approval of you as a person, but he should damn well give you credit where credit is due. check websites or forums to see how other people deal with bosses like him. hope everything wirks out, good luck.

hey you worked there for seven years even if you got fired, that should say something about you, if you were with the company for that long they wanted you, and someone else will want you too. make sure the next job is better if you leave. before you leave(if you do) maybe you can collect references and letters from people you worked with and who know your a good worker. you dont have to do it right away but maybe try to network and get contact info from people you can count on to say good things about you. then if you do leave contact these people for references.

Your boss's boss depending on the type of person that he is might be vindictive and want your boss to pick on you and possibly pencil down your name in the event of a down sizing. I suggest you look for another job while you can or write a formal complaint to the Head of Human resources outlining the issues and possibly your fears. This will formally notify everybody in the company of your delicate position.

Leave and find another company.

You can't win in a fight with the boss, you might get a small victory on one issue, but if he is over turned on one issue, he will nit pick others and build a file showing you are incompetent or you have some other problem, and in the end, you will live a life of frustration until he sacks you.

It is hard to get hired if they contact him for a work reference. Opinions are hard to discredit, especially when you have to do it on an job application.

It is always best to look for another job and leave with a good reference than wait until you get sacked.
