I'm pregnant and asked to leave. Can I apply for unemployment?

Hello~ everyone! I need your help!

Not too long ago, I mentioned my employer that I would be leaving the office in the near future due to my pregnancy. I'm only 4 month into pregnancy but all of sudden asked to leave. Their reason was that they do not want me to be too stressed out for my pregnancy. Now I am more stressed out because I have no source of income! Now I'm trying to apply for WA unemployment. Do you this this would be qualified as Voluntary Leave (because I told them I'm leaving) or Laid Off? As far as I know, you do not get unemployment with Voluntary Leave. Sigh... Help! Please!

You are laid off unless you actually told them the date you were leaving. I assume you weren't leaving for 4-5 months.

Also - it is discriminatory for them to lay you off because of your pregnancy (unless you were say dealing with hazardous chemicals and there are no other jobs that don't deal with hazardous chemicals). Try this for evidence - write yourself a letter of reference and in it, state that you were laid off due to your pregnancy. Have your supervisor sign it (be cool about it, now) and that may help you quite a bit as you go through this process.

You quit. You didn't give them a specific date, just said "in the near future" but that's still a quit. They are not required to let you linger on until whenever. You quit and because you quit, you will not be eligible for unemployment.

They were probably just being nice when they gave you that "too stressed out" line, but the fact is, they didn't want to just wait around, wondering when you'd stop showing up to work. And you were probably just being nice when you gave them the heads-up about your leaving. But you quit. I'm not certain what you were planning on doing for income when you left "in the near future." But whatever your plans were, you'll just have to move them up a bit.
