I'm interviewing for a supervisor position at work and would appreciate any advice!?

I've prepared for this for the last month and a half. I feel that I'm ready, but I would appreciate any and all sage advice from my fellow Askvillians!

No doubt, if you feel you are ready, you are. The worst thing is to try to memorize something or not be yourself. You are a known quantity if you have been at the company for a while. But to review:

Management calls for the ability to support the company. It calls for you to be both a leader and a team player. Your team should be working with, not for. Your people skills should be good and your ability to bring the best out of people is important. Stability in your department is important and working toward the bottom line as well.

If you will have to fire, you can do it. If you have to recruit, you can do it. If change comes along, you can do it. Dont be boastful - be calm - you already know the job.

Creativity, willingness to get your hands dirty, and (forgive me for this!!) thinking out of the box if needed are all important. Knowing the day to day business is a given.

You definitely need a sense of humor. Reread the goals of your company and be certain that your answers cover these bases.

Get a good night's sleep; have a nice breakfast; be yourself and you will ace it. It is not rocket science and far less qualified (sad to say) have made it.

Find out what the last supervisor did right, and wrong. Use them to make a plan to present during your interview, about what you currently like about the department and what you would do differently. You're in a good position because you can get the inside scoop.

Is there anything you're missing that might hold you back as a supervisor? Make a plan for what you can do to improve yourself. You can talk about that when the "weaknesses" question comes up. They already know you, so you can't snow them with a vague, "I'm a perfectionist" answer. For example, if you're nervous speaking in public, say you're going to join Toastmasters. If you often arrive late, tell them you bought a better alarm clock :)

Of course, dress like the person who interviews you, so you show your management potential.

Good luck.

I'm proud of you :-)

So, I figure since we work in the same building I might be of some help. When I interviewed for the position I am in right now, I emailed two of the guys on the same team and asked their opinions on preparation. Both gave position-specific tips, but both also concentrated on the same thing: Be yourself, believe you can do it, stay positive, and most of all, if you don't know the answer admit it up front!

Also, ask your CSM or someone you trust for a mock interview. Very, very helpful. Especially since there are a lot of applicants for the position you are aiming for. (Not me, though. My only career goal is to get them to drop the 'acting' after my title, lol)

Ideally, you would have those two combined, such that any discipline were actual motivation, also.
