It has been extended by three more months, next time will I be made permanent.

Only your Boss can tell you that :-)

NB. HMRC may well decide you are 'permanent' and demand you pay Tax PAYE + full rate NI ... but that's another issue ..

Not neccessairly. I worked for a large telecommunications company and when we had overflow they would field out contract positions for new employee's and that way they didn't have to pay them benefits and some other perks. and after there contract was up they renewed the agents and some kept being renewed for up to 5 years. I remember this one poor lady went up to human resources stating all she had done in her roles and how she has never been hired on and the answer was still no from human recourses she ended up quitting. Alot of companies do this its saves them alot of money.
