How to you leave your job?

I work in a really busy kitchen but im unable to advance any further than what i have in the last four years when i started working i was a porter after two years of training i quaified as a chef and was promoted to trainee chef and for the past 2 and half years i've been put back to portering and then put back in the kitchen my position changes every second week. i feel like im wasting me time and energy with this company.

problem is me and my boss are close we go for coffee, lunches. i have been offered a better job with more oppertunites with a well known hotel. i just dont know an easy way to leave without upsetting a few people. i'm still not sure if i am going to leave.

Personally I would ask your boss if you can talk to them in private, explain that you really enjoy working there and are really grateful for the opportunities you have been given, but that you have been offered another job and feel that it is time for you to make a change. You could soften the blow by giving your boss a card to thank them for their support (probably won't work so well for a male boss - a bottle of drink may be better?)

And I wouldn't do it until you have accepted the new job and it is defo yours, you don't want to be left with no job!

People who are really your friends will be happy for you, not upset with you, you have to do what is right for you and if they can not accept your decision then they are not worth having as friends anyway.

All the best.

Okay, here's my advice for what it's worth, man up and say look I'm going for another job, I think it's got to a point where I need a change. If they are really yr friends they will understand, if they are not... Screw it and move on, somtimes you have to be selfish in this world to get on or you get stuck in a rut, go for it, best of luck

The first thing is to decide whether you want to leave or not. Changing jobs is difficult but most people have more than one job in their working life you you will need to do it at some point.

If you do decide to leave arrange a meeting with your boss and then be open and upfront, tell them you have decided to leave and explain the reasons why (just say whatever you are comfortable saying, it doesn't have to be the whole truth). Make sure you have a written dated and signed letter stating your resignation which you should give to your boss at the end of the meeting.

If your boss values you they may decide to make you a counter offer of more money or a more suitable role to stop you leaving. You should listen to the offer and give it consideration but don't feel bad rejecting it if it isn't what you want.

If you are professional about it then you should manage to leave on good terms. I have keep it touch with several of my previous bosses even if it was a little difficult at first.

If you are feeling that frustrated with your current job then you should accept the job offer. Your boss should understand and wish you good luck with it, especially if you are friends. It is really easy to get into a rut and make excuses not to take a leap of faith and change jobs, but try to imagine where you will be in 2 years time if you don't take this new job. Explain to your current boss that its nothing personal, you just need a new challenge. Good luck, hope it works out for you.

Sometimes the grass may seem greener elsewhere but you will never know until you have tried. Just remember you work to earn money and although it is important to be happy in your work you need to progress if you are to realise many of your life's ambitions.

The fundamental question is "are you adventurous or are you scared of change". if you are the first type go for it; it is a truism that in 20 years time you will regret more the things you didn't do than those you did. If you are the second type you may have a problem coping with the move to a new position.

Whatever course you take always leave on good terms you never know when you may require a reference from any former employer.

Best of luck
