How should I explain a year of absence working in my cover letter?

July 2008 was the last time I was employed. In the Spring of 2009 I relocated to NY. With day care being expensive I decided to stay at home with my three year old daughter while continuing a distance education degree. Anyone who's a full-time parent knows that it's a job in of it's self! Soon my daughter will begin public school and I'm ready to work!

How should I explain in my cover letter the reason for my absence without being too personal?

Should I explain the reason for my absence?

Thank you so much for you time and answers.

To some degree, it's a matter of taste, but I would NOT put it in your application. This kind of information is better left for the interview, in which you can explain it the exact way you did here - that sounds absolutely fine.

I understand your concern, but it's ok. Every 2 years I take 3 months off from working to have a vacation and to have a mental break. I don't feel like I need to explain it or put it on a resume. I think employers understand that people take time off. I wouldn't say anything unless they ask you about it and even then...give as little explaination as possible. Say--I moved out of state and it took a while to find adequate daycare. And move the conversation forward. Good luck .

You gathered information and made a well-informed decision. In this economy, it's not uncommon for people to have an employment gap, but I would explain it in the cover letter. Basically, you did a cost-benefit analysis and made an informed decision to stay at home. The cost/benefit of being employed versus the cost/benefit of being a stay at home mother. You evaluated the budget implications for each decision and the non-financial impacts, both short and long term.

I apologize, this is more directional advice than a clear answer as to how to phrase it on a cover letter. Hopefully it leads you in the right direction and possibly helps on an interview.
