How much $ do hairdressers make?

Category: Other

blforeverblforever

Anyone out there know how much hairdressers make in small towns in Pennsylvania? How much have you made in local salons (not privately owned, but chains like Holiday Hair etc.) Is it worth the $15,000 investment to go to Empire Beauty School? Or would I be making a huge mistake money-wise?

I've heard the only way to make good money is to own your own salon, but I also heard it takes YEARS of being in the business to build up a client following.

Thanks!

I'm not really sure on the laws in Pennsylvania, and would suggest you maybe call around to some of the local salons and request a meeting. I'm sure you would find someone all too eager to share their success with you and how they got started and what it would take, how much income potential there is, etc.

Here in California, one doesn't necessarily have to go spend BIG money at an institute (though many do). They can "work under someone" and gain hours...enough hours to go before the board. If that is an option in Pennsylvania, I would look into that before you spend such a large amount for school.

Of course, once you are licensed, you make more money. However, you can, in the meantime, have you some business cards made and offer to do one or two heads for free, and let them serve as your portfolio of work. You will gain clientele from others based on how good your work is. In this way, you already have a following as you are going through the learning stages - whether in a shop or an institute.

Wishing you the best!
